Guide to Salat (Prayers)


 



HOW TO PERFORM SALAT  



Face the Qiblah with the sutrah in place to prevent anybody from passing in front



Throughout the prayer keep your eyes on the spot where the forehead rests in sajdah



 Make the niyyah



Think about the particular fard (obligatory) or Sunnah (supererogatory) prayer you intend to perform



Do not utter the intention aloud



 



Raise both hands to the shoulders and say the Takbir:



Allahu Akbar



(Allah is Greater)



 



Fold the right hand and arm over the left hand and arm on the chest



The right hand should look as if it is grabbing hold of the left arm with the fingers pointing toward the left elbow



 



Silently recite the Du’a Isti’aadhah:



Subhana kallah humma wabi hamdika watabara kasmuka wata'ala jad-duka wala ilaha ghavruk



“You are Glorified, O Allah, and Praised, Your Name is Blessed, Your Majesty is Exalted, and none has the right to be worshipped but You”



 



Silently recite:



A'u'thu billahi minash-Shaitan-ir-Rajeem



“I seek refuge with Allah from Shaitan the cursed one”



 



Silently recite the Surah al-Fatiha, pausing after each verse:



Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem” (silently)



Alhamdu lil-lahi rab-bil 'alameen



Ar rahma nir-raheem



Maliki yawmid-deen



Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'een



Ihdinas siratal mustaqeem



Siratal latheena an'amta 'alayhim



Ghayril maghdubi 'alayhim walad thal-leen



“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful”



“Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds”



“The Compassionate Source of All Mercy”



“And Master of the Day of Judgment”



“You alone do we serve and to You alone do we turn for help”



“Guide us in the straight way”



“The way of those who You are pleased with, not the way of those who You’re angry at”



“And not the way of those who’ve gone astray”



 



Recite aloud or silently:



Ameen< /p>


“Oh Allah answers”



 



Recite another portion of the Qur’an



Pause for a moment



 



Raise both hands to the shoulders and recite the Takbir:


Allahu Akbar



“Allah is Greater”



 



Perform the ruku’


Slowly bend at the waist until the body and the head are parallel with the floor and 90° with the legs



Place the hands on the knees



 



Silently recite three or more odd times:



Subhana Rab-bi Yal Atheem



“Glory be to my Lord who is the very Greatest”



 



Rise from the ruku’, keeping the hands level with the shoulders



After straightening the spine, bring them down to the sides of the body



 



Silently recite:



Samee 'Allah hu liman hameeda



“Allah listens to the one who praises Him”



 



Silently recite:



Rab-bana lakal hamd



“Oh, our Lord, all the praises be to You”



 



Recite the Takbir, either silently or aloud:



Allahu Akbar



“Allah is Greater”



 



Perform the Sajdah



Go down to the ground by placing the hands on the ground before the knees



Fingers should be together pointed towards the Qiblah



Palms should be level with the shoulders



The front toes should point towards the Qiblah while the feet should be upright and the heels touching



Forearms should be raised above the ground and kept away from the sides of the body



 



Silently recite three or more odd times:



Subhana Rab-bi A'la



“Oh Allah, Glory be to You, the Most High”



 



Raise the head while saying, either silently or aloud, the Takbir:



Allahu Akbar



“Allah is Greater”



 



Perform the Jalsah:


Bring the left foot along the ground and sit on it



With the right knee on the ground, the right foot should be upright with toes pointing towards the Qiblah



 



Silently recite:



Allah hum maghfirlee warhamnee wajburnee war fa'nee wahdinee wa 'afinee warzuqnee



“Oh Allah, forgive me, and have mercy on me, and keep me on the right path, and keep me healthy, and provide me with Halaal sources of living, and complete my shortcomings, and make my rank high”



 



Recite the Takbir while going down to perform the Sajdah:


Allahu Akbar



“Allah is Greater”



 



Silently recite three or more odd times:



Subhana Rab-bi A'la



“Oh Allah, Glory be to You, the Most High”



 



Raise the head while saying, either silently or aloud, the Takbir:



Allahu Akbar



“Allah is Greater”



 



Perform the Jalsah



 



Rise for the second rak’a by clenching the fists and supporting the body while getting up



 



Fold the right hand and arm over the left hand and arm on the chest



The right hand should look as if it is grabbing hold of the left arm with the fingers pointing toward the left elbow



 



Silently recite the Surah al-Fatiha, pausing after each verse:

Perform the Jalsah



 



Spread the palms out and place the right palm on the right thigh just above the knee, and the left palm on the left thigh just above the knee



Put the end of the right elbow on the right thigh, and do not lean on the left hand



 



Spread the left palm on the left knee



Put the right hand on the right thigh and clench all the fingers on the right hand placing the thumb on the middle finger



Then, point the index finger towards the Qiblah, and fix the eyesight on that finger



 



While raising the index finger and moving it, silently recite:



At-tahiy-yatu lil-lahi was salawatu wat-tay yibatu. As-salamu 'alayka ay-yuhan-nabiy-yu wa rahma tullahee wa baraktuhu as-salamu 'alayna wa'ala 'ibadil-la hi-saliheen. Ash hadu anla ilahah illal lahu wa ash hadu an-na Muhammadan 'ab-duhu wa rasuluh



“All compliments, all physical prayer, and all monetary worship are for Allah. Peace be upon you, Oh Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us, and on the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that no one is worthy of worship except Allah. And that Muhammad (SAW) is His slave and Messenger”



 



Silently recite:



Allah humma sal-li 'ala Muhammadin wa'ala ali Muhammadin, kama sal-layta 'ala Ibraheema wa'ala ali Ibraheema innaka hameedum majeed, Allah humma barak 'ala Muhammadin wa'ala ali Muhammadin, kama barak ta ‘ala Ibraheema wa'ala ali Ibraheema innaka hameedum majeed



“Oh Allah, send prayers on Muhammad, and on the family of Muhammad, as you sent prayers on Ibraheem , and on the family of Ibraheem; You are indeed worthy of Praise, Full of Glory. Oh Allah, send blessings on Muhammad, and on the family of Muhammad, as you sent blessings on Ibraheem, and on the family of Ibraheem; You are indeed worthy of Praise, Full of Glory”



 



Silently recite:



Allah humma 'innee a'u'thu bika min athabi jahannam wa min athabil qabri wa min fitnatil mah ya wal mamatee wa min shar-ril masihid-daj-jal



“Oh Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of living and dying, and from the evil of the False Christ”



 



Silently recite:



Allah humma innee thalamtu nafsee thulman katheeran, wala yaghfi ruth thunuba illa anta faghfirlee maghfiratan min'indika, war hamnee innaka antal ghafurur raheem



“Oh Allah, I have been very cruel to myself (by ignoring my duty to You) and there is no one who can forgive the sins except You. So forgive me because You are the only Forgiver and have Mercy on me. Verily You are the Forgiver and Merciful”



 



Perform the Tasleem


Turn the face to the right, making sure the entire right cheek is visible to anyone who may (or may not) be sitting behind



Over the right shoulder, either aloud or silent, recite:



Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah



“May the Peace and Mercy of Allah Be Upon You”



Repeat, turning the face to the left, making sure the entire left cheek is visible to anyone who may (or may not) be sitting behind



Over the left shoulder, either aloud or silent, recite:



Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah



“May the Peace and Mercy of Allah Be Upon You”
